Social Science Section

Profile

The Social Science Section of the Institute was established in 2006 with a view to undertake basic, strategic and applied research in the freshwater aquaculture sector, transfer institute technologies, organize capacity-building programmes, and maintain liaison with fish farmers, fisheries departments, and the fishery industry as a whole.

The Section also handles farmer services for the Institute by organizing exposure visits, exhibitions, demonstrations, interactive meetings, trainings, and campaigns. The Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) caters to the needs of farmers visiting the Institute and facilitates the supply of technological products, publications, and services through a single-window delivery system. ATIC receives over 4,000 information seekers per year. The Agri Business Incubator (ABI) facilitates entrepreneurship development in the freshwater aquaculture sector, with 43 incubatees presently under the guidance of ABI-CIFA. The section is involved in spearheading the digital outreach initiatives with farmer friendly mobile applications to popularise the technologies of the Institute.

The Section is also developing geospatial decision-support systems for freshwater aquaculture planning using satellite remote sensing, GIS, and Google Earth Engine. This work supports mapping of inland water bodies, identification of aquaculture-suitable areas, climate-risk assessment, and generation of decision-ready spatial layers for fisheries departments and policy planners.
